Frank Rudy, the inventor of the Nike Air Sole technology, has died

Via Oregon Live

Late in life, Frank Rudy turned his attention from athletic shoes to cancer, funding research and working with doctors at clinics in Ohio and New York.

But Rudy, who died Dec. 13 at the age of 84 at his home in California, is best known as an inventor who created the Air Sole technology that helped make Nike a booming business in the 1980s and the leading manufacturer of athletic shoes in the world.

"Frank Rudy holds a singular place in the pantheon of Nike innovation," Mark Parker, president and chief executive of Nike, said in a written statement.

"His relentless creativity and focus on solving problems was, in many ways, the template for how Nike pursues performance to this very day."

Rudy is credited with inventing the Nike Air shoe cushioning system in the late 1970s.

In a history of Nike titled "Just Do It," author Donald Katz wrote that Rudy brought his idea for small air bags to be placed on a shoe's sole to Nike in 1977.

To test the technology, Nike co-founder Phil Knight took a pair of air-cushioned shoes out for a run.

"He set out in one of the prototypes and was amazed at the 'ride' the cushioning offered," Katz wrote.

"Rudy and Nike's early Air Sole technology was first built into a running shoe in 1979, and the bags were laid into a basketball and tennis shoe three years later."

Although it was used in a variety of shoes, the Air Sole didn't catch on with consumers until 1987, when Nike used television ads featuring the Beatles' "Revolution" to promote the Air Max, which made the gas-filled urethane pouch visible.

Marion Franklin Rudy was born in Cleveland on Jan. 24, 1925, and grew up in Fairview Heights, Ohio. He was drafted into the Army in 1943, came home and graduated from Case Western Reserve University in 1950.

Rudy is survived by his wife, Margaret; a daughter; and a granddaughter.

Rudy was an aerospace engineer who left the industry in 1969 to pursue a career as an independent inventor who ended up with more than 250 patents, according to a news release announcing his death.

In recent years, Rudy was an avid supporter of cancer research at the Ordway Research Institute in Albany, New York and the Cleveland Clinic.

Ben Walby, a family friend, said Rudy was a hands-on philanthropist who used his analytic engineering skills to consult with doctors on their work.

"He liked medicine and that was the ultimate puzzle for him," Walby said Thursday.

"He wasn't one to shy away from the ultimate challenge. The bigger the problem the more complex the problem, the deeper he dug in."

The NBA is getting ridiculous. Really David Stern?

via espn.com

MILWAUKEE -- Bucks rookie Brandon Jennings has been fined $7,500 for posting a message on his Twitter account after Milwaukee's 108-101 double overtime win over Portland last weekend.

Jennings was fined for the timing of his post, not the content when he tweeted: "Back to 500. Yess!!! "500" means where doing good. Way to Play Hard Guys."

The fine was announced Friday before the Bucks played at Cleveland.

According to the NBA's social media policy, players cannot tweet during game time, defined as beginning 45 minutes before the game starts and ending after players have finished talking to the media following the game.

The message has been removed from Jennings' account.

BEARD

About 5 years ago I decided to grow out my beard much to the dismay of my parents and brother. Some people thought it was a religious decision, some thought I was just some exploration of life. Honestly my beard rocks. It adds mystery to my relatively mystery free life.

I have gotten: Artist, musician, professor, poet, activist, Muslim. And its always assumed I am from Philadelphia. Its funny when people say "didn't I see you at a poetry slam in Brooklyn?" I answer "no I was watching "Jersey Shore" last night." FYI The LADY loves the beard so I am all good.

Below is a few beards that I admire

I CAN'T FRONT I DIG THIS GUY

Tom Ford really is really on his game. Is that the understatement of the decade? Anyway what he did for Gucci Tom Ford (his own line) which elevated my glasses game into the stratosphere.

Via Ask Men.com

Tom Ford is the dynamo designer credited with breathing life into the about-to -expire House of Gucci, nearly bankrupt when Ford took over as Creative Director in 1994. Enlisting fashion photographer Mario Testino in the company's image overhaul, Ford created a new sensual style - luxury and class imbued with lusty sex appeal - clothes that were made… to be removed. Two years later, sales at Gucci had increased by 90%. Ford would work the same miracle for Yves Saint Laurent and eventually move on to form his own, billion dollar Tom Ford label in 2004, where he designs clothes, accessories, fragrance, and eyewear.

Born in Austin in 1961, raised in Santa Fe, Tom Ford left the west for New York City at age 17 and the rest is, as they say, history. A denizen of the waning heydays of New York's Studio 54, Tom Ford talked his way into his first fashion job with relative ease -- despite the fact he had a degree in architecture and absolutely no experience designing clothes. From club kid to Parsons Institute grad, Ford also had a brief but hugely successful career as a commercial actor, starring in several national advertising campaigns, which paid his way through college. Ford moved to Paris soon after to work in the press office for Chloe -- a job in the lower ranks of the fashion world which left him with a new obsession -- designing clothes. Ford would go on to resurrect both Gucci and Yves Saint Laurent with a combination of great designs and a series of well-executed creative campaigns, most featuring nudity and sexuality -- fashion ads where the fashion was absent and only bare skin remained. As a result, Ford (who notoriously posed for a Vanity Fair cover flanked by a stark naked Keira Knightley and Scarlett Johansson), is known as an edgy, sensual designer -- savvy about manipulating the media to his advantage.

None of these skills, however, seem to have come into play in his second career in cinema. As a film director, Ford is subtle, classy and understated. His take on the Christopher Isherwood novel, A Single Man, is a gracious and elegant debut, the work of a man who knows what he wants and how to get it... gently. AskMen.com sat down with Ford to talk about acting, ego and how love is what it's all about.

AskMen.com : What made you choose this story and this era (the early 1960s) to explore in your first film?
Tom Ford : It’s set in the early '60s, although I think it was really the '50s until Kennedy was assassinated, at least on the surface of things. I love this era of clothes and cars and design, architecture -- and it felt contemporary when I first read the story -- although I do think we’ve come a long way since then. I also think that Christopher Isherwood was way ahead of his time. One of the things I always loved about his writing is the matter-of-fact way he treated homosexuality. Most of his stories and novels were autobiographical and so there is usually a gay character, but not necessarily as the center of the story. And the gay character is always treated as a human being. The relationship between George and Jim in this story -- I felt it was very important to depict that in a very matter-of-fact way. They are simply two people who are in love with each other. I didn’t want this to be a gay story; I wanted it to be a human story. And really, the more that we realize that love between two people is love between two people, the better off we’ll all be. AM : Were there things about the story that connected with you personally?

TF : I think anyone with a long-term partner, and I’ve been with my partner for 23 years, anyone with a long-term lover, if that lover dies, you could easily see yourself in a situation where you couldn’t see your future and you would be living entirely in the past. It’s about that loss. But the film isn’t about death; it’s about life. It’s about living in the moment and appreciating the small things in your life that sometimes just go by without you observing, and understanding your connection and understanding of the universe and understanding that relationships with other people are what really matter. The beauty of the world starts to pull at the character of George -- in his loss he’s finally connecting, he’s finally looking at people and he's responding to them in a different way. For me, this film is about life instead of death, although loss is at the center of it

AM : So there was a connection with this character for you.

TF : George is a character that keeps himself together by keeping his outer world in order. This is a man who exists and gets through the day by this order. On the worse day of his life, he’s polishing his shoes, he’s putting on his tie. He’s being held together by the surface and the order of things. It might seem silly to point this out, but Christopher Isherwood was a Virgo, and for Virgos it’s all about precision and order, and I am a Virgo as well. This is a man whose inner world and outer world are connected and he feels if he can keep his outer world together then he won’t collapse inside. George has a veneer but just inside is a romantic guy who is suffering so much, and it’s all just below this perfect surface.

AM : Tell us about choosing your actors. Sometimes it's difficult for a first-time director to attract talent like Julianne Moore and Colin Firth. What made them want to join in?

TF : Well, I gave them a lot of leeway. I don't want to talk about fashion, because making the film was a very different experience for me, in terms of why I did it and why I hope to keep doing it and what sort of expression it was, but there are certain similarities. Fashion is much more collaborative than one might think. You have to have an idea and vision and you have to communicate that vision to a team of people and you have to create an environment that allows those people to give the best that they can give. I was lucky enough to have great actors, and I tried to create an environment where they could perform. And to make them feel comfortable, to make them do the best they could, an environment that would make them want to give the best performance they could give. And as far as finding the actors, I don’t want to make it sound easy, but well, it wasn’t hard. I sent them the screenplay, and I sent them the part that I knew they might respond to, and they did. I had sent Julianne [Moore] the script in the hope that she would respond to it and she did. Colin [Firth] and I have the same agent, and he basically said that Colin’s schedule was impossible. So I had cast another actor in the role. But then I saw Colin at the premiere of Mamma Mia! and I was just thinking, "God, he was made to play this role!" A few weeks later, the other actor dropped out and I sent Colin an e-mail right away and he finally said yes. I’d like to think that the actors responded to the script.

AM : You acted as well when you were younger.

TF : When I was a kid, I thought I was going to be an actor. I actually studied acting when I was at NYU, and I made a lot of television commercials -- that’s actually how I put myself through NYU and through college. I quickly discovered that I didn’t really want to be an actor, because I didn’t feel secure enough at that time. I remember I did a Prell commercial when I was 19 and a bitchy hairdresser said, "Oh, you have thin hair. It's all going to fall out." And I remember becoming so paranoid about my appearance after that. It was traumatic, and I was so obsessive from then on, and I was not a good actor at all, in part because I was totally self-obsessed. I realized that it just wasn’t going to happen.

AM : In what ways do you see the style and aesthetic of this film differing from the style you created in your fashion career?

TF : My career in fashion has been very much about sexuality and sex, and I think a lot of people think that’s all I can do and what I am all about. This for me is a story about love, about romance -- therefore it doesn’t have that kind of nudity you might expect from me. It didn’t come from the story. What came was a sensuality that I tried to express with color and tone and set pieces. That’s what I used to help us understand what George is feeling. At the beginning of the film, George is not seeing things, he’s numb and the colors are dulled. As he begins to see the world more clearly -- really look at it -- that’s when things begin to warm in the film, color-wise. It takes on sensuality cinematically. Everything heightens, and the beauty of things starts to pull on him.

AM : Why filmmaking? What compelled you to begin this second career?

TF : I wanted to make film and had thought about doing a film for a long time. I think what's important for myself and anyone else who wants to create a film, or art, is [to] make sure that they have something to say, that they want to share something important, express something important. And I felt that the book really spoke to me. It’s a beautiful story that felt personal to me, that touched me, and that I felt I had the skills to translate the narrative to the screen and to share in some way. Film is an incredible way to express yourself and your vision, as is fashion, but you have to make sure [to] be confident and honest and true to yourself and say something that means something, because that is really the point of any art, right?

THANKS LOVE

What a great day yesterday. My beautiful lover randomly made this wonderful Banana Chocolate Bread. She just whipped it up just like that. She's the best. Shawty is a 10 (teeeeen)

JOE BUCK LIVE

So, last night I had the unbelievable privilege of going to a live taping of Joe Buck Live. For some of you who do not know Joe Buck is a sports commentator on mostly network television. With this HBO show he is allowed to be a lot more candid and ask those random, annoying, burning, and humorous questions that many people want to ask but don not have the balls or access to do so.

The show was shot at the NYU Amphitheater and the crowd was mixed with young, old, male and female sports enthusiasts.

Guests included:

Brian Westbrook and Brian Urlacher:

The quickly went into BW'S recent trouble with the NFL 's new epidemic: Concussions. BW talked about how it was strange getting one and that he actually lost consciousness and was actually dreaming snoring when the doctors got to him on the field.

BW "I had no recollection of the play and I at first was not sure where I was" Joe Buck seemed to make him think about the severity of his injuries because he continued to drive home the severity's of the injury (which BW was fully aware)

BU was very reserved and PC for the most part. He explained that he does not try to further injure a player. If he knows a player in injured he said "i just try to get them down". As one of the most revered and feared LB (Linebackers)_ in the NFL he seemed a little scared to answer a question that might make him badly or make him feel uncomfortable. All in all it was great to hear and see two of my favorite ballers speak about the pressure and scrutiny they face with disclosing injuries.

Favorite quote of that segment :BW: I only have one brain so I need to be cautious and play smart"

Pedro Martinez:

Came out to a chorus of boo's and "who's your daddy" chants. Pedro was hilarious, confident and brilliant in all of the dialogue between himself and Joe Buck. He was applauded by Joe for his stellar pitching statistics during the "steroid" era of baseball (219-100 Era 2.93Over 3,000 Strikeouts)

I think it is pretty impressive and again he is a former Met so I hold a little place in my heart for him.

The Main Event: Floyd "Money" Mayweather and Michael Strahan and Mark Wahlberg:

This was just pure comedy. These three athletes got the biggest applause of the night. More so because Giant fans are forever in debt for the Superbowl Championship and people just love Money's personality. This interview was just pure comedy. Money was talking about how much money he lost this past weekend with all of the NFL upsets this past weekend. Since Floyd lives in Vegas he said the gambling is just always there and as a boxer he said he can gamble on all sports even on his own sport.

Strahan spoke a lot about the Giant Superbowl win and rubbed it into MR. Wahlberg's face (being from Boston and being a hardcore Boston sports fan). He also spoke about his rather easy transition to television (FOX NFL Sunday and the sitcom (The Brothers and TV commercials))

Floyd completely captivated the crowd with all of his confidence and the fact that he says that he is confident on beating Manny Pacquiao and Strahan translated "He's going to bust his ass"

Wahlberg was all love last night. Praising Strahan and Mayweather for their future on the big and small screens. And of course they kissed a little ass themselves saying they loved his acting.

I must say I was truly impressed with Joe Buck. What a great night. Thanks to Mike L for the tiks.

Sports and Talk I love it.

RIP JOHN LENNON

Lovely Lady G always calls me a sap but I really do think about John Lennon a lot. Not sure why; maybe because I walk by the Dakota where he was shot and killed) almost everyday on the way home or maybe I like feeling sad? I think its just I am such a huge fan of the Beatles and wonder what crazy John Lennon would be doing in 2009. RIP to one of the most talented and respected men ever. Happy Christmas. Happy 69TH Birthday (October 9, 1940 – December 8, 1980).

Considered that the world is in right now his songs are always so relevant. I really hope the war is over soon.

Andy Murray gets dumped for playing too many video games

via yahoo sports

Like another famous athlete, British tennis star Andy Murray has been having relationship problems of late. Unlike Tiger Woods, Murray hasn't been spending too much time with other women, however. He's been spending too much time on his Playstation.
Murray, the No. 4 ranked player in the world, was dumped by his long-time girlfriend Kim Sears due, in part, to the fact that he spent up to seven hours a day playing video games.
The Telegraph reports:
Sources close to Sears said one of the causes [of the breakup] was the world number four's long hours playing video tennis and PlayStation 3 games such as the best selling Call of Duty sequel.
Brad Gilbert, Murray's former coach, has said in the past that Murray spends "seven hours a day" playing video games.
The source told The Sun: "He would spend all his time glued to them. In the end she just got fed up with it. She wanted more out of the relationship."
Most guys who play seven hours of video games per day don't even know what a real woman looks like*, let alone dates one as gorgeous as Kim Sears. I'd think this is an inspiring tale to the video game generation. Sure, it seems crazy that Murray would play more with his PS3 than his girlfriend but, come on, have you seen Modern Warfare 2? (Have you, because I have no clue what it is.)
I'm also fascinated by the fact Murray plays tennis video games. You'd think the last thing he'd want to do after a day of training is sit down and play pretend tennis. But, hey, with Federer still truckin', that might be the only way Andy Murray is going to win a major.

KB Commentary,

"I mean c'mon this really true? This girl is pretty hot and doesn't he have to train/play in tournaments? And ok if its 7 hours then there are 3 hours to have couple time. I know he's not knocking it down for more than 30 min and then go to dinner for 2.5 hours? That leaves 14 hours to train and maybe fit it some more couple time. She seems like a whiner. booooo hoooooo

I love articles like this: They remind me that athletes are human and stupid like us regular folk. Aand let's face it with Rafa and Federer in the mix this dude won't be #1 while these guys are playing"

THE WORLD CUP IS UPON US

Looming upon us is the world cup. As I type the pool play was being determined and I am happy to say that the US has a descent draw in group C with England, Slovenia, and Algeria. This is my favorite sporting event because it is like a festival that brings all people together. Not so much in terms race and religion but in terms of sport freaks (like myself) to people who never watch a game until this time of the year every four years because they understand the magnitude of this event. Also gives me an excuse to dust off the USA Soccer jersey

JOGO BONITO will be on display beginning Spring 2010 in South Africa.

Not to mention the fact that seeing Nelson Mandela at the opening ceremonies will definitelty bring a tear to my eye. There will be no "hand goals" this time around. I hope not. LOL

Brooklyn is like going on vacation so we always need advance notice. Anyway, she loves antiques (aka Junk- Mr. G'S perception) and thank god we have never been asked any questions at this place. I think it would totally turn her off and might not go back just because she hates when people intrude on her "booness" Check out the link below to see what I am referring to:

FASHION?

I was jsut minding my own business browsing the internet (racked.com) when I came across this atrocity of epic proportions. C'MON SON Really? WTF is this about? No matter if this product came with $392 (the price of the pants) would these ever go on my body and should never go on any human beings body. Lingerie (can't believe I am actually and writing the word) worn under your clothing is fine but I am truly offended by this piece of trash.

Ok I'm done but look below at the I dream of genie pants gone wild (wrong, wack, and all other words that star with "W" that are insulting)

The confounding world of athlete tattoosGuns, incorrect Bible references and lack of humility highlight pro inkings

"I shall fear no man but God." Um.

This is the time of year when parents all over America take their children to the nation's sports facilities, sneak down to courtside and show the youngsters how dangerous it is to drink and ink.

How else do you explain Golden State Warrior Stephen Jackson's hands? Not the hands at the end of his arms. The tattooed hands on his chest and stomach, holding a handgun, praying. I am not kidding -- two hands praying with a gun between them. Praise the Lord and pass the ammunition.

What is the message Jackson's stomach is trying to leave us? "God, please help me knock over this Kwik Stop?" "This is the Glock the Lord hath made?" Neither. Jackson says it represents him praying that he doesn't need to use a gun again.

Damn, Stephen. Where's your commute, Fallujah?

How else do you explain Kenyon Martin's lips? Not the lips on his face -- the lips on his neck. They're fire-hydrant-red women's lips, smooching there for all time, a permahickey. They're a tracing of his girlfriend's lips, the rapper Trina. I hope they stay together. Because hell hath no fury like a woman who has to stare at another woman's lips every day and night. You're talking turtlenecks in July.

You need look only a foot farther to see something even more puzzling on K-Mart, whose skin is a kind of human bathroom stall -- his ornate "I Shall Fear No Man But God" scrawled on his back. Uh, see Kenyon, the thing is: God isn't a man. Did you mean, Fear No Man. Fear God? That's the unfortunate thing about tattoo guns: no delete key.

Still, this is not as bad as the tattoo that Washington Wizards G/F DeShawn Stevenson added this past offseason -- a Pittsburgh Pirates "P" on his cheek. The only problem is, it's backward. Did you do it yourself in a mirror, DeShawn? Because it looks like a 9. "If you're standing [farther away] it looks like a P," Stevenson told The Washington Times in what has to be the leader for Dumbest Quote of 2009.

Um, nope, still backward, DeShawn. From close-up, from far away, from the Hubble telescope, still backward. Luckily, it's only on your face.

Many NBA tattoos seem to have all the foresight of a 4 a.m. Vegas wedding. Why else would Orlando Magic guard Jason Williams have "W-H-I-T" on the knuckles of his right hand and "E-B-O-Y" on the left? How often does a person arrange his fists side by side so that people can read them? Answer: Rarely. Which is why Williams must get these two comments quite a bit:

(1) "Nice to meet you, Whit."

(2) "E-boy? Is that a scouting Web site?"

Why would Celtic Marquis Daniels keep a tattoo of a guy blowing his brains out on his right arm? For the holidays? Why would LeBron James have "CHOSEN 1" scrawled across his back in a font usually reserved for MAN WALKS ON MOON? If a person really is The Chosen One, would we really need a tattoo parlor to spread the news? Why would Chicago Bull Brad Miller have the Saturday morning cartoon character Scrappy-Doo -- Scooby-Doo's nephew -- tattooed on his arm? (Apart from the obvious intimidation factor, of course.)

Every tattoo parlor should come with a proofreader. This might have prevented Penn State tight end Andrew Quarless from tattooing "GODS" on one triceps and "GIFT" on the other. Quarless may be God's gift to football, but not to punctuation. It lacks an apostrophe, to say nothing of humility.

And why would Shawn Marion of the Dallas Mavericks get an ornate Chinese character tattooed down his leg without having a Chinese person in tow? See, Marion thought he was getting his nickname, "The Matrix," but instead got something that -- crudely translated -- comes out to "Demon Bird Mothballs." Still, it would be a very good intramural team name.

Boo-boo tattoos are everywhere. Why does Gilbert Arenas of the Wizards have the Barack Obama slogan "Change We Believe In" inscribed on the fingers of his left hand when (A) he forgot the word "can" and (B) he said on his blog he wouldn't even vote? Why would New Orleans Saint Jeremy Shockey have a massive bald eagle and an American flag tattooed on his arm that -- when half-covered by his jersey sleeve -- looks like the Sam the Eagle Muppet? Why would Suns guard Jason Richardson have the And1 shoe logo tattooed on his arm when anyone with Junior Mints for brains could guess what would happen next? He signed with Reebok. And 1 more player who didn't think before he inked.

Of course, not all athlete tattoos are colorful proof that unbridled vanity will wind up slapping you and your ego around the school yard. For instance, Udonis Haslem of the Miami Heat has a giant map of Florida on his back. This is very useful for Haslem's friends.

Haslem friend No. 1: I think we're lost.

Haslem friend No. 2: Hey Udonis, lean forward.

Haslem friend No. 1: See? When we got to his coccyx, we were supposed to go toward Coral Gables!

Nor do we guess every humiliating tattoo on athletes is Seagram's related. For instance, we think we know what happened to MMA fighter Melvin Costa. Written in elaborate scroll underneath his belly button, it says -- and may God take my eyesight if I'm lying -- "I Have A Small Penis."

Melvin, how many times have we told you? Never fall asleep at the tattoo parlor.
