Opens Mar 18, 2009Complex, lyrical, and keenly observed, Andrew Berrien Jones's paintings of the stoop railings of lower Manhattan and the shadows they cast reveal the particular beauty of a part of the streetscape often ignored. Focusing on lower Manhattan's ironwork railings dating from the mid 1830s to the mid 1840s, Stoops of Manhattan—Railings & Shadows presents over 20 paintings. As historic buildings continue to be altered, or even demolished, these "stoopscapes" represent an important form of documentation, capturing the artistry of the original ironwork.
