FELA : AIMEE AND LAUREN

Via La Times BLOG:

Until the mid-1970s, the music and dance of Africa was largely “folkloric” to Bill T. Jones.

“It was beautiful people in the bush, dancing and singing," says the modern dance choreographer. “I was much more preoccupied with the rock counterculture at the time.”

That is, until Jones heard the music of Fela Anikulapo-Kuti, the Nigerian human rights activist and recording star.

“Modern Africa hit me in the face with the music of Fela,” says Jones. “This was a man who was using horns like James Brown and Sly and Family Stone, the jazz saxophones of Max Roach, and the drums of Africa. This was no maiden dance from some small village in Africa. Fela's music was an instant education.”

The Tony Award-winning choreographer (“Spring Awakening”) is now bringing that music to Broadway in “Fela!,” the part-concert, part-fever dream, for which Jones is also acting as director and co-librettist (with longtime collaborator Jim Lewis). The show received rave critical notices for its off-Broadway tryout run in September 2008, during which it attracted a number of celebrities. Three of them -- Jay-Z, Will Smith and wife Jada Pinkett-Smith -- have signed on as producers, bringing with them a sizable investment in the show.

But Jones says what really makes him excited about the project is the cast itself. “Everybody on that stage is either African, Carribbean or African-American, a first for me, and that in itself is an incredibly rich communal experience,” he says.

“All sorts of subconscious and psychological elements are at work because of this confluence of cultures and beliefs. And all that too goes into a work that is dreamlike in aspiration and yet, amazingly, of Africa and its people.”

Survey: More minorities in US playing tennis
(AP) – 2 days ago

LOS ANGELES — More Americans are playing tennis, with Hispanics and blacks showing a marked increase.

The U.S. Tennis Association says in a survey released Tuesday that more than 30 million people hit the courts this year. That's a 12 percent increase from 2008 and up 25 percent from six years ago.

The survey shows participation grew in all age groups under 50 and within all ethnic groups. The biggest increases were among Hispanics, with 32 percent more playing the game. Blacks had a 19 percent increase.

The annual survey of 6,000 Americans was done by Taylor Research Group on behalf of the USTA and the Tennis Industry Association.

I have no interest in seeing this movie but apparently the exec's over Universal thought this movie would be more successful if the black people in the movie poster were photoshopped out. "Universal said it regretted causing any offense, and it has abandoned plans to use the revised poster
in other countries. A Universal spokesman said the revised advertisement was aimed ‘to simplify’ the poster to actors who are the most recognizable in international markets"

C'MON HE'S 86

NASHVILLE, Tenn. -- Tennessee Titans owner Bud Adams apologized Monday for making an obscene hand gesture while celebrating his team's 41-17 win over Buffalo.

The 86-year-old Adams was seen throwing an emphatic series of middle fingers from a luxury suite at LP Field in Nashville, Tenn., after the Titans (3-6) had secured the blowout over the Buffalo Bills (3-6), which included 24 straight points in the fourth quarter.

Titans owner Bud Adams, 86, rides off the field Sunday in Nashville after a 41-17 win over the Bills.
Adams apologized in a statement, saying: "I need to apologize for my actions yesterday near the end of the game. I got caught up in the excitement of a great day, but I do realize that those types of things shouldn't happen. I need to specifically apologize to the Bills, their fans, our fans and the NFL.

"I obviously have a great deal of respect for [Bills owner] Ralph Wilson and the history we have shared. I also understand there will probably be league discipline for my actions and I will accept those."

Earlier Monday, The Associated Press reported the NFL was looking into the hand gestures.

Adams and Wilson are original owners from the American Football League, and Sunday's game was a legacy game with both teams wearing throwback uniforms. Wilson was inducted into the Pro Football Hall of Fame this year, and their teams share a history of emotional playoff games, including the Music City Miracle in January 2000.

NFL commissioner Roger Goodell was at the game Sunday after having breakfast with Adams. The league said Monday that Goodell left Adams' suite at the end of the third quarter and spent the fourth quarter sitting with fans in the end zone before leaving the stadium.

Titans cornerback Cortland Finnegan, whose fellow defensive backs Vincent Fuller and Roderick Hood scored the last two touchdowns with interception returns in the final three minutes, said he was all for it if Adams was enjoying himself.

"I don't know if he did it, but I condone fun things," Finnegan said, according to The Tennessean. "If he was having fun doing it, then by all means, do what you do."

Adams can be seen in a YouTube video flashing the hook 'em sign of the Texas Longhorns, whom Titans quarterback Vince Young played for, before extending each hand with the middle finger individually, then together, after pointing toward the Bills' sideline.

The Tennessean reported Adams was seen making the gesture again on the field after the game.

Titans linebacker Stephen Tulloch said Adams' presence was an encouraging sign.

"He is a cool owner and it is good to see him around here supporting us," Tulloch said, according to the Nashville newspaper. "To have an owner like that, it's cool."

Players have been fined by the NFL for making such a gesture. San Francisco kicker Joe Nedney was fined $7,500 in October 2007, and Michael Vick was fined $10,000 and donated $10,000 to charity in 2006 while playing in Atlanta.

"The league holds us as players to a higher standard, so to have an owner flip the bird not once but twice the league has to hold him to the same standard if not more," Bills safety George Wilson said Monday. "He's at the top of the heirarchy. If you don't hold him accountable, then you're questioning the integrity of the system."

Buffalo defensive tackle Marcus Stroud saw footage of Adams on TV but didn't care.

"He owns that team and Mr. Wilson owns our team," Stroud said. "That's about the gist of it, as far as it goes with me. It's not like he can come down and strap up and put on any pads or anything like that. It doesn't bother me. If that's what he wants to do, go for it."

iPhone app debuts for plastic surgery enthusiasts

"This is very funny. As vain as we all are do we really need more reason to contemplate this dangerous ELECTIVE surgery?"

Now There's an App for People Interested in Plastic Surgery

OMAHA, Neb., Nov. 16 /PRNewswire/ -- An intuitive new iPhone application, developed by facial plastic surgeon Dr. Steven Denenberg, allows you to view hundreds of before-and-after photos, turn your iPhone around to take your own photos, and with the touch of a button, email them to the doctor with your questions - like a free online consultation - all while sipping your latte.

"The iPhone app is the next powerful communication tool," Dr. Denenberg said. "Just as most plastic surgeons now have Web sites, soon most will realize the value of using this new technology to describe their practices, display their skills, and give patients easy ways to contact them. With Apple on track to have 60 million iPhones sold by the end of 2009, and 120 million by the end of 2010, doctors can't ignore the importance of adding an iPhone app to their practices."

Dr. Denenberg's iPhone app is available by searching the App Store for "Denenberg" or going to http://www.App33.com, which contains a video of the app in operation, screenshots and instructions for using the app, and a link to the iTunes App Store to download the app. The app runs on the iPhone and on the iPod touch.

Dr. Denenberg is a facial plastic surgeon trained at Harvard and Stanford. Double board certified and in practice since 1985, Dr. Denenberg has been listed as one of America's Top Doctors by Castle Connolly Medical Ltd. every year since 2004. MANGINI DESERVES THIS

After you left the JETS and you weren't really a great coach anyway you left for greener pastures in Cleveland? NOT!!

VIA ESPN.COM

Lewis: Mangini overworking playersComment Email Print Share Associated Press

BEREA, Ohio -- Cleveland Browns running back Jamal Lewis said he's frustrated by another losing season and believes coach Eric Mangini is pushing his players too hard.

Mangini

Lewis

Lewis, who intends to retire after this season, said Thursday that he doesn't want to be a "babysitter" to Cleveland's younger players. He wants to win and expressed disappointment that two- and three-hour practices aren't translating into wins for the team, which has a 1-7 record.

"There's talent all over this locker room, young and old," he said before practice. "There's talent everywhere, but that talent has got to be ready for Sunday, it's got to be fresh for Sunday. You can work all day, but if you're going to work like that, you're probably not going to get what you want out of your players."

While Lewis doesn't mind working hard, he said Mangini is wearing out his players. The team captain said he hasn't approached his coach about making changes.

"This is his show, not mine," Lewis said. "You got to take care of your crop. If you don't, when it comes time to harvest, you're not going to make no money because the crop is no good. That's that."

Lewis said the length and intensity of Mangini's practices are not the issue, it's that the first-year coach's approach isn't producing wins.

"If I'm going to come out here and work the way I work, then I want results," Lewis said. "Right now, that's not what's going on. I feel like it's just a waste of time for me."

Earlier, Mangini said he has changed his approach and adjusted this season.

Lewis was asked to comment on the coach's stance.

"Next question," he said.

Not to worry, Sammy Sosa is just rejuvenating his skin
By 'Duk

It looks like we finally have an explanation behind that widely-circulated picture in which Sammy Sosa(notes) appears as a combination of a Twilight extra, a big Charlie Chaplin fan and someone who is taking the death of Michael Jackson just a little bit too hard.

According to a friend of Sosa's, the former Cubs slugger is (thankfully) not suffering from Vitiligo or another type of disease. Sosa's appearance, rather, is a result of an elective "rejuvenation process" for his skin and he was apparently "surprised" when he came out looking whiter than his old home run buddy, Mark McGwire.

The Chicago Tribune has more:

"He's not trying to be Michael Jackson," said former Cubs employee Rebecca Polihronis, who talks frequently with Sosa.

"He is going through a rejuvenation process for his skin. Women have it all of the time. He was surprised he came out looking so white. I thought it was a body double. Part of (the photo appearance) is just the lighting.

"He is in the middle of doing a cleansing process to his skin. The picture is deceiving. He said, 'If you saw me in person, you would be surprised. When you see me in person, it is not going to seem like the picture ... People who saw him in person did not react the same way. He can't believe it is such a big deal."

Sosa may say he's not as white as he appears or that it's not a big deal, but that doesn't change the fact the whole process is creepier than Mad Men's Pete Campbell.

As our own Dave Brown points out, Sosa has started wearing green contact lenses and it's possible that all his money and ego are conspiring to turn him into a Dominican version of Jerry Jones, Wayne Newton or Joan Rivers. That's a pretty scary thought.

Of course, this wouldn't be the first time Sosa has tried to achieve better living through chemistry, so should it really shock us that he's trying to rejuvenate an already-resilient organ with a process normally reserved for vain women? What a strange dude.

ODB Film Premiering in Harlem Next Week
NEWS

» by JUSTIN STEWART November 4, 2009, 9:44am

Even in his death, the story of Ol Dirty Bastard, a.k.a Dirt McGirt, continues to be told. On Tuesday, November 10, the tribute film Dirty: One Word Can Change the World will premiere in New York.

The film will be shown thanks to the ImageNation Cinema Foundation and was directed by the late rapper's cousin Raison Allah.

Serving as a celebration of the rapper's life and exploits, the documentary will showcase interviews with those close to him such as the Wu Tang Clan, Sunz of Man and others that will provide their own personal accounts of their encounters with Dirty.

Known as Russell Jones by birth right, the rapper met his untimely death on November 13, 2004 due to an accidental drug overdose.

Those in attendance will be in for a treat once the final credits roll as they will be given a live performance from Brooklyn Zu, a group affiliated with the Clan that included ODB. Being heard first on Return to the 36 Chambers: The Dirty Version, the group also consists of his cousin 12 O'Clock, Shorty Sh*tstain, Murdock, Zu Keeper and Buddha Monk.

Along with the performance, viewers will also have discussion with the group along with members of the Clan and author Terrie Williams who will all give more detail into the musical career of their fallen friend.

Williams is a social worker who transformed herself into an author and now serves as an advocate for youth who deal with depression. With books to back up her credentials, her fourth, Black Pain: It Just Looks Like We're Not Hurting, tells the story of depression as it affects African- Americans while tying in her own personal struggles with it.

Around the time of his death, ODB was suffering from legal troubles and was demonstrating odd behavior, according to the media. The discussion will also touch on mental health as well as substance abuse prevention as some felt as though the rapper may have gone through the same ailments.

The documentary will show at the National Black Theatre and tickets will sell for $15 for advanced purchases and $20 at the door.
